The 2019 NFL Playoffs shift to the NFC side of the bracket on Saturday night when the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks engage in a Wild Card round matchup. These foes have become rather familiar with one another, meeting four times over the last five seasons, including a game early on in the 2018 campaign. It will be only their second postseason meeting, however, and if the first was any indication, viewers could be in for a wild ride. Fans may remember the drama that unfolded back in 2007, when Seattle eked out a 21-20 victory after Dallas quarterback Tony Romo infamously botched the hold on a game-tying extra point that cost his side a chance at overtime. Much has changed for both franchises not only in the 12 years since that epic clash, but even since they met back in Week 3 of this season. Oddsmakers believe the Cowboys will get their revenge this weekend, installing the club as a 2.5-point favorite.
One of the biggest differences from that September contest to now is the addition of Amari Cooper to the Cowboys receiving corps. Dallas struggled to move the ball through the air until they added the former Oakland Raider into the mix, as evidenced by quarterback Dak Prescott’s 19-of-34 passing, 168-yard, one-touchdown, two-interception performance in Week 3. Earl Thomas, Seattle’s star free safety, was responsible for both those picks, but he was lost for the season one week later after suffering a tibia break. That game also took place at CenturyLink Field, a place the Seahawks have traditionally dominated—they only lost two games there in 2018—while the Wild Card will be hosted at AT&T Stadium, where Dallas tied for the second-best home mark in the league with a 7-1 record this year. Seattle hasn’t been nearly the same team on the road as it has been at home, going just 4-4 overall and losing two of its last three away games.
It won’t be easy by any means for the Cowboys to pick up a victory in their 2019 NFL Playoff opener, as they struggled to top offenses led by mobile quarterbacks this year. Dallas went 0-6 against squads that started a signal-callers that can consistently make plays with their legs, something Seattle’s Russell Wilson can do despite the fact that he had just two carries for negative-one yards back in Week 3. Wilson’s ability to avoid the rush and escape pressure—he took just two sacks and threw no interceptions against the Cowboys in September—open things up when the Seahawks do decide to pass, which is something they haven’t needed to do all that often given the franchise boasts the league’s best rushing attack. Still, Seattle will likely need to make some plays on the defensive side of the ball to pull an upset. The team racked up five sacks in addition to the aforementioned pair of interceptions on Prescott to help secure a 24-13 win a few months back and will need to bring the heat again to have a shot at advancing to the Divisional Round. The ‘Boys went 9-2 in games that Prescott avoided an interception in and that win total should move to double-digits if he can avoid being picked off on Saturday night.
Will the Seahawks find a way to stymie Dallas’ offense for the second time this season and escape Jerry World with a victory, or will the Cowboys finally figure out this opponent and pick up their first win against them in four tries?
